How it starts

In the last few months, I've witnessed the begining of the end of my private servergeek email account. For years, I've had a pristine account on servergeek.com that was completely spam free. I never signed up on any mailing lists, I never used it in any public postings, it was my completely stealth entry-point for email from friends and family. And now it's coming to an end. Exactly how it happened and whom to blame is difficult to pin down, but here's the sequence of events:

First, I decided to speak at VSLive for FTP. In a moment of weakness, I used my real, secret email identity, and FTP immediately added me to their spam list. Much complaining later, I thought I had escaped. But who knows, because ...

About the same time, I exchanged email with a good friend and ex-roomate, Tim Mays. Tim and I promoted punk rock concerts together for quite a while, and Tim is now a very successful club owner/promoter in San Diego. Tim added me to his email list for notices about events at the Casbah - no big deal, except that once - just once - just one time, he accidently CC'd instead of BCC'd. I love Tim, and it's not Tim's fault, but ...

Some clove-smoking, cross-eyed, crack-head, hush-puppy wearing, Avril Lavigne-listening pencil-neck that works at a local San Diego music rag decided to spam me, using Tim's address list, stolen from the CC line. To say I had words with the clueless weenie is like saying General Sherman went to the beach. And then THIS guy, who shouldn't have even used my address in the first place, sent out mail in an open CC ...

So now my inbox is starting to fill with offers of love from Russia, offers of wealth from Nigeria, and tales of fantastic job opportunities everywhere. I'll put up with the spam for a while, but it looks like I'm moving to a new address.
